Headings and subheadings of pages, articles, and text on your website are important for search engine results. Headings provide a hierarchical structure and make it easier for visitors to navigate your website. This article provides a brief introduction to headings.

Structuring headings

The best way to organize and structure your texts is with headings. Headings range from levels H1 to H6. These are HTML tags that are used to define the structure and hierarchy of text content on a website.

For a correct heading structure, it is very important that the levels are used correctly. Levels H1 to H3 are the most relevant for search engines. Headings H4 to H6, on the other hand, no longer play a major role in the weighting of your website and are rarely used.

Nesting headings

It's important for both search engines, and also for your visitors that texts are sensibly structured and organized in a way that is easy to understand.

The H1 heading is the main heading of a single page. Therefore, H1 should appear exactly once on each page and be in the first position. Headings H2 to H6 are intended as subheadings to organize content accordingly.

For a correct structure, all headings must be logically organized one below the other. For example, an H1 heading can be directly followed by an H2 heading and some paragraphs, but not with an H3 heading.

Formatting headings

The different weighting of the headings is also emphasized by the font size. If you format your headings using CSS or a website builder, you should also take the weighting of the size into account.
