How to use .img files
To create a memory image on a CD or DVD, the .img file extension is used. The .img file format can be opened using a digital drive or various other programs.
What is an .img file?
.img is short for “image” and indicates that the file is an exact disk image of a CD or DVD. This means that an .img file is similar to an .iso file. .img files are reproducible and can be used to save various types of media.
Opening an .img file as a virtual drive
Normally, an .img file can be opened directly and used as a standard drive. The process to do this is similar on both Windows and Mac. Double click the .img file and the system will automatically create a virtual drive. You are now able to access all the data as you would when using an external memory device. This allows you to partially or completely copy the data contained within the file and move it to a hard drive.
Once you are finished, you can “eject” the virtual drive. To do this on Windows, right click on the drive and choose “eject”. If you’re using a Mac, you can pull the .img file to the eject button. You will find this on the bottom right corner of the screen, where you would normally find the recycling bin icon.
Opening .img files with PowerShell
With Windows 10, you can also use PowerShell to open an .img file. First, make sure you have Windows Administrator activated. Then, right click on the Windows button and choose “(Windows PowerShell (Admin)”. You can now enter the following command: Mount-DiskImagePath "C:\Folder\file name.ISO" and confirm your entry using [return]. You will then get all the important information about your virtual drive. If you want to eject the drive, you can do this with the following command: Dismount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:\Folder\file name.ISO".
Which programs can be used with .img?
You can also use .img files with a wide range of other programs. These include, among others, various burning and copying programs, such as WinRAR und a number of WinRAR alternatives. Below is a list of software that you can use to open an .img file:
- MagicISO
- ISOBuster
- Lightning UK ImgBurn
- Virtual CloneDrive
- HH Software Virtual CD
- Apple Disk Utility
- Daemon Tools
- WinRAR
- WinZip
- 7-Zip
Unzipping an .img file
If you want to unzip a file with the .img extension, you can do this by using WinZip. Once you have opened the program, you can click on the “Open” icon at the top. Then, select “Disk images” from the bottom right and go to the folder where the .img file is stored. When this opens, you will have several options available to you. Select “Yes, unzip the files to a folder I choose”, and then choose the folder that you want to unzip the files in. When you open this folder, you will be able to see all the corresponding files.
